Outlook Email Alias Guide
Overview
Microsoft Outlook provides a basic email alias feature that can be used for account isolation, similar to a private domain email setup.
The idea is simple: reduce the number of places where your primary email address is exposed. An address that has been used across the internet for years may eventually end up in leaked databases, marketing lists, or targeted by repeated login attempts.
Instead of using one email address for everything, create separate aliases for different parts of your life.
At a minimum, three to four aliases would be a good starting point.
Your most important address should be reserved for sensitive accounts such as banking, government services, and other accounts that require a higher level of protection. Use this address only for those specific accounts.
A second alias can be used for personal email with family and friends.
A third alias can be used for online shopping and other general purchases.
This separation makes it easier to control where each address is used. If one alias eventually becomes exposed to spam or unwanted activity, your other addresses remain isolated.
The Ghost Login
This is the most important address to create.
The Ghost Login is your main Microsoft account login address, and it should be used only for signing in to your account. It should never be disclosed to anybody, used to send or receive email, or given to websites and services.
The goal is to make the address extremely difficult for a spammer or attacker to discover or guess.
Something like:
cal-2h6b8f-mylogin@outlook.com
This creates a login address that is completely separate from the email addresses you use publicly.
If one of your other addresses has been leaked or is already known to attackers, they cannot simply use that address to attempt to sign in to your account when it is not your private login alias.
I also personally disable phone number sign-in. This removes another identifier that can otherwise be used as a sign-in option.
The Ghost Login should be treated like a secret username: the less it is exposed, the less useful it is to anyone trying to access your account.
Setup
You can use the Arcunox generator tool to create aliases for your new Outlook email system.
To set up the Ghost Login and additional aliases:
- Sign-in to your Microsoft Outlook account.
-
Go to:
Your infothenAccount info -
Select:
Sign-in preferences -
On the
Manage how you sign in to your accountpage UnderAccount usernameheading, select:Add email -
Under
Add a usernameheading, select:Create a new email address and add it as a username -
Create your new alias and select:
Add username
Your new alias is now connected to your Microsoft account.
Make the Ghost Login Your Primary Address
The next step is making your Ghost Login the primary account address.
-
On the
Manage how you sign in to your accountpage, find your Ghost Login address. -
Select:
Make primary -
Under:
the
Sign-in preferencesheading, Select:Change sign-in preferences - Disable sign-in access for all other aliases.
Now your Ghost Login is the only alias enabled for signing in, while your other aliases can still be used for sending and receiving email.
Using Your Aliases
Once your Ghost Login is protected, you can create additional aliases for different purposes and gradually update the accounts you use regularly.
Be careful when sending emails. Always check that you are sending from the correct alias.
Never send email from your Ghost Login address.
Your Ghost Login should remain private and only exist for account access.
A standard Outlook account allows a limited number of alias changes per year, but this is still enough to create a small-scale alias system with improved separation between your public email addresses and your private account login.
